Defining Behavior Modification

Yesterday, I witnessed an overturned truck laying on its side in the middle of daytime traffic. This accident occurred four years ago. Yet the crazy thing is,  it happened on the opposite side of the freeway when I had my auto accident. How freaky is that??

I was driving on my normal route to the ranch where I take horse riding lessons.  When I arrived at the ranch, my whole body was shaking like a nervous dog tail.  After gathering my tack and saddle blanket, I began brushing my horse.  Kody must have sensed I was anxious because he kept backing away from the grooming site.  The trainer had to lead him back to the spot so I could continue grooming the horse.

I've been taking riding lessons for over a month.  A year ago, I would not be sitting here writing this blog to tell you about riding a horse until you experience it for yourself.  Many times, I have pushed myself to 'take the reins' and let go of my anxieties. But sometimes its easier done than said.  Maybe that's why I am hoping to overcome my anxiety of whatever is holding me back from really enjoying this experience.

The trainer queried me to continue working on "trotting'.  At some point, Kody got spooked by a banner flapping in the wind nearly knocking me off the saddle.  I screamed like a little girl.  The trainer stopped Kody and explained to me my shrieking caused Kody to be more upset.  The trainer corrected me on the right way to handle the horse if that happened again.  This was a true learning experience.  Not only was it a learning experience, but it also gave me encouragement to recognize my behavior and how it affects the way I deal with unexpected situations.
